Coma World

Coma World is a new collaboration between Maxwell Hallett, a.k.a. Betamax known from The Comet Is Coming/Soccer96 and Pete Bennie from Speaker’s Corner Quartet, bringing together their potent chemistry in an intoxifying material documented on the album released via Byrd Out earlier this year.

Betamax drives the duo with his signature ‘rhythmadelic’ drum rapture as Pete elegantly pummels bass tones into an assortment of wonky pockets. Both layer on a blanket of electronic dark matter to create a sonic womb-like world laid out for the brave listener to explore. This is dub and jazz reduced to the raw fundamentals of experimentation, trance and spontaneity. Inspired by a friend’s recollections of being in a coma, the duo delve through the mysteries of consciousness and return with a striking array of colourful sound artefacts. The two artists sling their dirty funk through cold clouds of darkness leaving psychedelic trails of bleeping fractal spillage.

CIL will be DJing on the night. South-London born sound artist CIL experiments in the field of electronic music, using a blend of spoken and sung poetry, and live electronics to communicate aspects of her identity. Curating mixes to be played live, or on her monthly residency at Deepbed radio is another, more recent avenue for her musical exploration. RootStemFruit is her series of mixes tracing roots reggae, rocksteady, dub and sister/daughter genres – the sounds which score her childhood memories of sitting in her dad’s car.

“A potent mix of dark grooves, trembling bass lines, and electronic rumblings question the concept of reality” – Jazz Revelations
