Classically trained, multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer and pop star in waiting Val James is a unique, refreshing and genuinely exciting proposition.  Lyrically drawn to the darkness of The Cure but musically dealing with a Talking Heads tinged brand of wonky, intelligent pop, Val James is an intriguing, multi-faceted artist.

His first release, the ‘White Light’ EP is a collection of 4 songs written at various different points over the last two years. Debut track ‘Desire’ is an instantaneous pop juggernaut and perfectly juxtaposes uplifting, aspirational melodies with considerably darker and thought-provoking lyricism. It serves as the perfect introduction to Val’s brand of thoughtful, impressively informed pop.

Visual inspiration and aesthetic is just as important as the music to the Irish born, London based artist, who often writes with films playing silently in the background. ‘Lost In LA’ – also on the EP – is a case in point, providing the perfect sonic accompaniment to the sun-drenched, washed out colours of LA found in the films of Sofia Coppola.

White Light was written, recorded, produced and mixed by Val in his East London flat, wanting to create a cohesive body of work that was entirely his own. The EP is a testament to Val’s varied and unique writing style and provides a tantalising taste of what is to come from this hugely exciting young artist.
