Voodoo Juergens + Rotifer

Never mind Article Schmifty, the continental connection pursued by Gare du Nord Records, enabled by the Austrian Cultural Forum continues with this show by Voodoo Juergens who last year made the leap from local hero of Vienna’s indie scene to number one of the actual charts (the Austrian charts, that is), followed by sold-out gigs all over Germany.

Juergens could be described as part Richman/part Jarvis/part young Beck if he didn’t sing in Viennese vernacular. So will it translate? Possibly not, but it doesn’t have to, what with Voodoo’s winning ramshackle charm.

The invite to come to London was extended by Viennese expat Robert Rotifer who is going back, not to Austria, Brexies, but to his old power trio format featuring Mike Stone and Ian Button having put out his last album Not Your Door as a solo effort. Rotifer’s songs have drawn comparisons from Ray Davies to Robyn Hitchcock “with heart-wrenching chord changed pitched somewhere between XTC and the Beatles” (Uncut).
